Treatment and prevention

There is no "quick fix" for treating high cholesterol, but by making healthier lifestyle choices and perhaps taking cholesterol medications such as one of the statins, your loved ones will thank you for reducing your risk of heart diseases.

Lowering cholesterol starts with lifestyle changes, from eating healthier, lowering your weight, and increasing your physical activity. All these will help you meet the your cholesterol-lowering goals.

If your doctor has prescribed cholesterol medications for you, you should know that some commonly-taken herbal products can affect how your prescription medications work. You should also know that grapefruit juice can react with your cholesterol medications. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor about what herbal supplements you take and ask about whether your medication is affected by eating grapefruit.

Finally, remember that it is important to take your cholesterol medications regularly. Stopping your medication or forgetting them frequently may increase your cholesterol again. If you have any side effects talk to your doctor about what to do. See your doctor regularly and have your cholesterol level checked to monitor your progress and see how well your medication and your lifestyle changes are working!
